Edward Thomas Brooks (c.1834–?) was an artist and photographer who established a business in Newbury, Berkshire, in 1857. Born in Stockport, Cheshire, he had worked as a designer in London before settling in Newbury. By 1861 he was living in Northbrook Street and combined photography with drawing instruction, picture framing and the sale of artists’ materials. He married Jane Paris in December of that year.
Brooks was among Newbury’s earliest professional photographers and was an early producer of stereoscopic views of the town and its surroundings. His topographical work included photographs of Newbury and neighbouring villages, with surviving examples also recording places further afield. Four known carte-de-visite views comprise one of Marlborough, Wiltshire, and three of Woolton Hill, Hampshire. The Marlborough view appears to date from before 1860, making it an especially early example of his topographical photography.
Brooks also produced studio portraits and stereoscopic views, taking advantage of the growing market for photographic images of local places. By 1871 his business encompassed photography, optics, art materials and picture framing. He subsequently left the photographic trade and was recorded in 1881 as a commercial traveller in the food trade.
Brooks’s photographs provide an early visual record of Newbury and the surrounding counties during the formative years of commercial photography. |
